Driving Tunnel Efficiency with Cloud-Based Asset Management

About
About Egis
Egis is a global leader in engineering and infrastructure services, with operations spanning transportation, urban development, energy, and environmental sectors. Egis Road and Tunnel Operations (ERTO) is responsible for the management of two of Ireland’s most critical transport corridors — the Dublin Tunnel and the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork.
Managing this infrastructure requires a deep commitment to safety, operational continuity, and technological agility. ERTO’s responsibilities include:
- Toll collection
- Traffic control and tunnel safety
- Emergency and contingency planning
- Regular infrastructure and equipment inspections
Ensuring safe and efficient tunnel operations means having a reliable, modern system for asset management — which became the core objective of this transformation project
Problem
Managing On-Prem Environments
ERTO was relying on an existing on-premises IBM Maximo environment that was no longer aligned with the organization's evolving needs for mobility, cloud-readiness, and operational speed.
Challenges included:
- Limited accessibility and flexibility for remote and mobile teams
- Gaps in real-time visibility across tunnel assets and infrastructure
- Manual processes that slowed down inspections and work completion
- Increasing pressure to reduce disruption for tunnel users during maintenance windows
The organization needed to modernize its asset management platform to support faster, smarter, and more connected field operations.
Solution
A Comprehensive Digital Transformation
Naviam was engaged by ERTO on a three-year contract to deliver a comprehensive digital transformation of its asset management environment. The project focused on two key deliverables:
- Migrating IBM Maximo to the cloud, enabling enhanced system accessibility, scalability, and reliability
- Integrating Fingertip, Naviam's mobile solution, to give the ERTO field workforce direct, in-field access to Maximo functionality
By combining Maximo Application Suite with Fingertip by Naviam, ERTO gained:
- Real-time, point-of-work visibility and data capture
- Fully mobile work management, even offline
- Faster workflows and more agile maintenance scheduling
This modern architecture gave the tunnel operator the tools to digitize, streamline, and scale its critical infrastructure operations
Result
With the cloud migration and Fingertip deployment in place, ERTO has already realized substantial benefits within the first year of the project.
Operational Efficiency
- Improved first-time fix rates and maintenance response
- Faster work progression thanks to mobile access to Maximo
- Enhanced ability to plan and carry out preventive inspections
Data Quality & Accuracy
- All work data is now digitized and synchronized in real time
- The mobile solution supports online and offline modes, reducing data gaps
- Greater control over asset records, reducing duplication and manual errors
Business Impact
- Increased asset uptime, minimizing tunnel closures and traffic disruption
- A 360-degree, real-time view of tunnel infrastructure from any location
- A scalable solution that sets the foundation for future innovation
