Supporting 24/7 Aviation Operations with a Future-Ready Maximo Platform

About

About HKBAC

Located at Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBAC) provides 24/7 executive aviation support to business jets in Hong Kong. Since opening in 1998, HKBAC has provided aircraft technical support, ground handling, and passenger and crew services to clients from around the world.

HKBAC supports approximately 9,000 private jet movements and 40,000 corporate, private, and VIP passengers annually, with more than 20 dedicated business aviation runway slots allocated each day. Following a HK$500 million expansion, its aircraft handling capacity has doubled, while its total footprint has increased by 53% to 24,500m² and its Executive Terminal has quadrupled in size to 4,800m².

The expanded facility also includes three large-scale aircraft hangars capable of accommodating ultra-long-range business jets. With an operation of this scale running around the clock, HKBAC requires reliable and resilient technology to support its growing operational requirements.

Problem

Modernising a Critical Asset Management Environment

Before the upgrade, HKBAC faced several critical challenges with Maximo 7.6 and its legacy setup. IBM’s end-of-support announcement introduced risks around data protection, business continuity, and compliance, while maintaining the existing infrastructure placed significant demands on internal IT resources.

Key challenges included:

  • Legacy infrastructure requiring costly upkeep, manual monitoring, and duplicate systems for resilience
  • Routine patching, backups, and troubleshooting consuming significant IT resources
  • Limited internal capacity, with teams focused on maintaining uptime rather than innovation
  • Skill gaps associated with the move to MAS 9 on Red Hat OpenShift, including Kubernetes and container orchestration
  • Hard-coded customisations making integrations with modern tools complex and costly
  • Limited automation contributing to repetitive tasks, human error, and inconsistent patching

These challenges made it increasingly difficult for HKBAC to maintain its existing environment efficiently while supporting the needs of its expanding operation.

Solution

Moving to a Fully Managed, Future-Ready Platform

Naviam Cloud+ addressed these challenges through a comprehensive migration from Maximo 7.6 to MAS 9 on Red Hat OpenShift, providing HKBAC with a fully managed environment and reducing the demands placed on its internal IT team.

The solution included:

  • End-to-end cloud migration from Maximo 7.6 to MAS 9 with minimal disruption
  • Ongoing patching, upgrades, monitoring, and security managed through the platform
  • ISO 27001-certified processes, continuous audits, proactive threat monitoring, and disaster recovery
  • A subscription-based model simplifying licensing, eliminating hidden costs, and reducing total cost of ownership
  • A structured six-month migration with phased SIT, UAT, and production cycles
  • A single-provider approach providing streamlined support and faster issue resolution

HKBAC particularly valued the structured delivery approach and transparent communication throughout the project. Key milestones, risks, and deployment schedules were communicated in advance, enabling effective planning and minimal disruption to business operations.

Result

Improving Performance, Resilience, and Business Focus

Following the upgrade, HKBAC has seen improvements across system performance, availability, resource utilisation, security, and infrastructure management. The managed environment has also enabled its teams to spend less time maintaining infrastructure and focus more closely on application initiatives and business growth.

Key benefits include:

  • Significantly fewer interruptions and enhanced performance across core asset management and mobile functions
  • High availability providing minimal downtime and rapid failover to support 24/7 airport operations
  • Significantly reduced routine patching and infrastructure management requirements
  • Infrastructure resources redirected towards higher-value application initiatives and business growth
  • Strengthened security and alignment with modern regulatory and data protection standards
  • More predictable costs and a scalable platform for future needs
  • Greater focus on application development and innovation to support evolving business requirements

"Our experience working with the Naviam team has been very positive. They demonstrated strong technical competence and a clear understanding of both the MAS platform and our operational requirements."
